Mao bamboo, also called Nan bamboo, is a kind of herbaceous plant. Its reproduction mainly relies on the buds on the root. The buds grow into bamboo shoots and come out of the earth in March every year and become new bamboos. In April to May, the new bamboos grow vigorously 80-100cm up each day. It just takes four years for a new bamboo to grow into useful timber. After a mature bamboo is cut, bamboo shoots will grow from the root in spring all the same, thus realizing sustainable growth.
Provided with excellent physical and mechanical properties, Mao bamboo can compare favorably with high-density broad-leaved timbers. Its static flexural strength and elastic strength are 2 times that of common wood. The density of bamboo timber is 0.789g per cubic centimeter, the forward tensile strength reaches 201.7Mpa, and the compressive strength is 74.2Mpa.
